The President delivered the opening address at the "Ideas Are Not Crimes" conference, organised by the Irish section of the Scholars at Risk Network and Universities Ireland.
In his speech, the President highlighted the increase in attacks on higher education communities around the world, with academics being attacked because of their words, their ideas or their place in society.
