President and Sabina Higgins rang the Peace Bell at Áras an Uachtaráin as part of the Bells for Peace initiative calling for world peace and an end to war. Church bells across Ireland were rung for 11 minutes from 11.03am as part of the initiative to coincide with the anniversary of the end of the first World War on 11 November 1918.

The Peace Bell at Áras an Uachtaráin was erected in 2008 to mark the 10th anniversary of the Good Friday Agreement and has been rung by a wide range of distinguished visitors in the years since.
