President Higgins attended a dinner in honour of Rory Best, who captained the Irish rugby team from 2016 to 2019.
In May 2018, President Higgins welcomed the Irish Rugby team to the Áras, in tribute to their Grand Slam victory in the Six Nations tournament.
President Higgins is Patron of the Irish Rugby Football Union, and he has attended many of the women’s and men’s home matches.
