The United Nations have designated 17 October as the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.

The Day presents an opportunity to acknowledge the effort and struggle of people living in poverty and a chance for them to make their concerns heard.

At an event organised in Dublin, President Michael D. Higgins spoke of the reasons why the day is being marked across the world, and of the importance of going beyond strategies that merely alleviate poverty, by resolving to eradicate poverty at its root causes.
