The President's State Visit to Greece began with a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, in Athens.

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is a cenotaph dedicated to Greek soldiers killed at war. The sculpture by Greek sculptor Fokion Rok includes extracts from the Funeral Oration of Pericles, and it is customary for visiting Heads of State to begin their State Visits with a ceremony here.

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is guarded 24 hours a day by the Evzones, the Presidential Guard.
