President Michael D. Higgins has marked St. Patrick’s Day with a special message to “all those who form part of the Irish family, and its friends in the families of the world.”

In other years, the President and Sabina Higgins normally attend a number of events celebrating Ireland’s national day, but this year, in light of Covid-19 public health restrictions, the annual festival will be taking place online.

While the President usually marks the Day by attending a number of public events, including the parade in Dublin’s city centre, and by hosting receptions for groups and people that have made a particular contribution to Irish society, this year the President has chosen to publish a video message to send his best wishes to the Irish people and reflect on the impact of the global Covid-19 pandemic.
