President Higgins received Mr. Kazumi Matsui, mayor of Hiroshima, to Áras an Uachtaráin on a courtesy call.
Mr Matsui became mayor of Hiroshima in April 2011. He was re-elected as Mayor in 2015, 2019 and 2023.
Mayor Matsui is the current President of Mayors for Peace, an international organisation of cities dedicated to the promotion of peace that was established in 1982.
This is the first visit by a mayor of Hiroshima to Ireland. President Higgins and Mayor Matsui discussed Ireland and the Mayors for Peace’s collective goal of achieving a world free from nuclear weapons.
During his visit to Ireland Mayor Matsui will also address Seanad Éireann.
