On 5 August 2016, President Michael D. Higgins attended the Galway v Dundalk soccer match at Eamonn Deacy Park.
After the match, the President met with players and coaches of the Galway United team, as well as with a group of 10-14 year old players from the Al Helal football academy in Gaza, who were on a visit to Ireland
