On Thursday, President Michael D. Higgins delivered a major speech on Ireland's relationship with Peru and the contributions made by Irish people to Latin America.

The President said that many Irish became involved with uprisings and nationalist movements throughout Latin America and the Caribbean – in Mexico, Chile, Bolivia, Colombia, Argentina, Brazil, Puerto Rico, Cuba and Peru – as thousands of Irish men enlisted in the patriot armies campaigning against Spanish rule between 1817 and 1824.

In his speech at the Palacio de Torre Tagle the President focused on the legacy of Roger Casement. The President spoke of Casement's contribution to human rights, through his work in the Putumayo region.
